Looking to "Justify" winning Kentucky Derby performance in the Preakness stakes. |
Justify will now move to Maryland and "old hilltop" better known as Pimlico racecourse, to contest the second leg of the triple crown. The horse certainly proved he was talented with an emphatic win in this year's Kentucky Derby.
Trained by a savvy west coast trainer Bob Baffert, who lives and breathes winning big races. He is also ridden by hall of fame jockey Mike Smith, who rarely makes mistakes in big races. His ride in the Kentucky Derby proves that he is still at the top of his game. While breaking sharply, he was able to stay just off the leader in the sloppy conditions. While entering the far turn, Smith urged his horse to take the lead, soon opening up going into the homestretch. He was able to hold off both Good Magic and Audible to win the race by and 2 1/2 lengths.
In winning the race he broke a 136 year old jinx, becoming the first horse since Apollo in 1882 to win the Kentucky Derby without having a race as a two-year-old. The horse is not only full of talent, having now won all four of his races lifetime. He is also visually stunning, big, strong and impressive looking. This son of Scat Daddy looks to have triple crown winning potential. He certainly has the right cast of characters surrounding him. |

The horse also has a Chinese connection, as he is part owned by the China Horse Club, a racing syndicate which purchases horses and races them world wide. It's great to see the Chinese involved with a horse here in America, especially one with potential to be a champion.
Bob Baffert has won the triple crown before in 2015 with American Pharoah, so he has the credentials to train a champion. Justify has good gate speed which will help him at Pimlico, which is a track that often favors horses running near the lead. It is unlikely that he will have any excuses in the race and after his dominating performance in the Derby, much will be expected of him.
Will he follow in the footsteps of past triple crown winners or will he be a one hit derby wonder. Only time will tell, but he certainly looks poised to put in a great effort in the Preakness and if he does manage to win. He will cause a sensation at Belmont Park for the Belmont Stakes, where he could have the opportunity to become a triple crown champ. by Kerry Zangara |
