Stunning Clash on Cards between Frankel and Camelot

8/13/12 - Newmarket on October 20 might seem a little way away just now, but racing fans on Betfair are already dreaming of the possibility that the two outstanding racehorses, Frankel and Camelot, may well clash at the home of Flat racing in the Group 1 Qipco Champion Stakes, writes Elliot Slater.

At present the four-year-old Frankel is unbeaten in 12 races at up to a mile, and the year younger Camelot has won all five of his career start at up to 12 furlongs, so the prospect of the pair clashing at a median trip is something racing purists would give their right arm to see.

A great deal of water has to flow under the bridge before such a race becomes reality. Frankel is set to step up to 10 furlongs for the first time in his illustrious career, as he bids for the Juddmonte International Stakes at York’s Ebor Festival meeting on August 22.

Camelot, on the other hand, looks set to attempt to become the first horse since the legendary Nijinsky in 1970 to land the Triple Crown, when he takes his chance in the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster in mid-September.

Should both horses come through their next respective outings with their unbeaten records still intact, then the Champions Day clash could well and truly be on the cards.

Camelot has been given a mid-season break, since following his last-gasp success in the 2000 Guineas with an impressive win in the Investec Derby, after which he put up a brave display to win the Irish Derby on bad ground at the end of June.

For his part, Frankel has blown away all opposition over a mile, turning top notch races such as the Lockinge Stakes, Queen Anne Stakes, and Sussex Stakes into little more than exercise canters.

The prospect of seeing Sir Henry Cecil’s star take on Ballydoyle’s unbeaten three-year-old would cap what has already been an outstanding Flat race season.
